A waitress is someone(a women) who waits on a table. Think of someone who waits for you to make an order then brings them to you when they’re cooked at a restaurant. They are also servers, serving drinks and alcohol. Servers are preferably bartenders and bottle servers who serve people drinks they order. Think of someone who works at pool bar for some fancy hotel and walks around taking peoples’ drink orders and bringing them back. You don’t need a permit to do either job(just over 21 in the states).

It’s simply political correctness. Flight Attendant/Stewardess, Actresses now want to be called Actors (but never turn down a Best Actress award), Secretary/Administrative Assistant. I always call them waitresses because that’s what they are.

Waitress and waiter are outdated in Canada and the US because they’re gender-specific; the term server is seen as more egalitarian.

They’re the same. Some people just have preferences. I’ve been a server/waiter for 5 years. I’ve worked from the bottom up and I’ve never heard anybody say there’s a difference, nor has anybody ever been corrected at any of the restaurants I’ve worked at for using one word over the other.

It’s just a matter of preference.

I think this is a modern made up term so as to not upset the sexes, a water is a male server, a waitress is a female server, as is a barman is male and a barmaid is female, its a gender thing
