I have four(4) computers on a Workgroup. I have one that I am using as a “server”. All the files for all the users on all of the other computers I want to place on here in a specific folder and then map the other computers to that folder. The problem is, when I break those folders down into each users own folder(inside the mapped folder) I need to be able to limit each user to their own folder. Is that possible without Windows Server? Thank you in advance for your help.

Are you using XP pro? If so you can set ntfs permissions on the users folders and only give rights to that user. You may have to turn off simple file sharing in Windows explorer-tools-folder options-view. the last option is simple file sharing. Then you will see a security tab when you click the properties of a folder.

If you are using XP Home you will have to use just the share permissions

To do this you need to share one general folder, and outside this set up the user folders and share those. This means setting up the same user names and passwords on the “server” machine as the users on your network. Set the generally available share to allow anyone full access, then set each user folder to only the particular user. Remove all other access to these, except yourself for admin use. If users might change machines, you could write a logon batch script and put it in the All Users startup folder under programs in documents and settings. This will automate the mapping. 3 lines are all you need if you call the user folders the name of the user. Call the file logon.bat

net use G: \servername\general

net use U: /d /yes

net use U: \servername\%USERNAME%

This will map the general folder to G: or whatever you like, then remove any referance to a previous map to the users folders, then map U: to that user’s folder by name. This is how major domain servers often set up drives, except they use central logon scripts.
