What is the name of a more appropriate group for the altar servers?

I’m confused. What should be the name of the group of the altar servers?

Is it “Knights of the Altar” or “Ministry of Altar Servers”? Can anyone help me clear this up. Which term do you use in your parish / church?

Well, if you live in the UK and are an altar server you could join the Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary.


If you live elsewhere, I’m afraid I can not help you. However, I would suggest that Knights of the Sanctuary sounds crass and Ministry of Altar Servers smacks a little of the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter.


Ignore the sanctimonious twats who harp on about “We have only servers.” They are just being holier than thou. The verb to serve, the nouns service and server are all capable of many meanings, both religious and secular. Although, to be (grudgingly) fair to them, in many churches where the have altar servers, they simply call them servers.
